God’s Gifts

Hello, and Happy Memorial Day, tender friends!

As you head out to your barbecues or other celebrations while we wait out the rain here in Virginia, I wanted to share this moment of gratitude.

I had one of those moments this weekend. Those moments that make you ask, “Why God, why do I get all of these good things?”

I let the chickens out of their coop. The air was fresh and clean from rain a few hours earlier. The sun streaked through the trees.

I retrieved the eggs from the coop, more than I could carry in one trip back to the house. I cradled the ovular smoothness in the palm of my hand, still warm from being freshly laid.

from being freshly laid.

The chickens pecked the ground, finding worms from the recent rain. They wriggled, hanging out of either side of their beaks. The birds chirped as the wind moved the branches of the trees.

Why God, why do I get all of these good things?

Okay, tender friends, that’s all for today! Enjoy the remainder of the long weekend!

I love ordinary moments like these that make us notice with gratefulness. I find myself praying more in the garden.

This morning as I was pulling an awful, sticky weed from under my roses, I was reminded of the scripture that Paul encourages us about in Hebrews:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

This weed clings and entangles like sin and I hate it. May I also hate sin as I hate this weed. Grateful for a Savior Whose blood wipes away my sin. No weeds allowed in His garden of grace.

Thank you for sharing that, Debi. The garden is the best place to pray. I’m sure your roses look beautiful. I’ll have to catch an updated photo on your blog once your weeding is done.

When I received an extraordinary blessing, an elderly friend broke out into a big smile and said, “Just accept it!” I think it gives God joy whenever we accept His blessings, whether great or small.

Maybe your extraordinary blessing will be a future toastmasters speech topic?

I suspect God is quite pleased, Stacey, when instead of asking “Why do You let bad things happen to me?” we ask, “Why am I so blessed?”

Thank you, Mitch. I asked that other question a lot when I was younger…it still creeps up sometimes, but I can usually see the human sin that causes suffering a bit more clearly now.
