7 Eat Your Skincare “Secrets”

Hello, tender friends!

Ok, this title feels ridiculous because it makes it sound like I think I have the skin of a beautiful goddess. The truth is that it’s not something I think about, but enough people ask me about what I do for my skin on a weekly basis/what diet I follow that I decided it’s time to make a post about it.

So here it is, my top 7 tips for glowing skin in terms of diet:

  1. If you’ve been here for any length of time, you know about my obsession with bone broth. I make my own because I consume about $100 worth of broth a week. I heat it up on the stove each morning and put it in my Yeti for work.

2. Sardines. I buy the ones that are already in olive oil and put them on top of greens with apple cider vinegar and balsamic. I add avocado if I have it. It’s easy, delicious and full of omega 3 fats which most of us are deficient in.

3. Limit dairy. I’ll be honest- this one is hard for me. I rely on dairy to fill me up when I don’t have time to cook, but I also notice my skin looks best when I can go a few weeks without it. This is true even though I only consume organic dairy.

4. Rosemary and lovage. Lots of herbs are good for your skin, but these are the two I eat most frequently.

5. Celery. Cubby and I have days that we eat celery throughout the day and each eat a full head, or more, ourselves. We eat a ton of detox vegetables, but this is the one that I notice impacts me the most in terms of skin clarity.

6. Kale, or any vegetable, cooked is aspic. Aspic is the gelatinous substance that oozes out of a whole chicken when you cook it. Some people say that the collagen content isn’t as rich as a bone broth, which is true, but I still get the same skin boost when I eat it as a I do when drinking broth. I use it by cooking a whole chicken until it starts to release the gelatin, then pour the gelatin on a separate dish of kale, seasoned with salt, garlic, and smoked paprika. It’s amazing.

When people act like eating healthy is a sacrifice, I don’t get it. This is one of my favorite things to eat, hands down, and I would make it every day if we ate through a whole chicken every day.

7. Raw egg yolk. I know this is controversial, but I love raw egg yolks. Sometimes I mix them into shakes. Sometimes I eat them straight, sort of like taking a shot. I eat cooked eggs but see a visible difference in my skin only when consuming the yolks raw.

I’m not scared of salmonella, but I guess this is one of the ways I live on the edge. You know, with my cup of chamomile tea and books at night. Pure, 40-year old edginess over here.

I also eat tons of berries and other vitamin-c rich foods that stimulate your body’s natural collagen production. I eat tons of sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, nuts, etc. But these 7 things are the things that I notice make a visible impact on my skin when I eat them. As with God’s pharmacy, I believe in keeping things simple and staying at the source.

Happy healthy eating! Next week I’ll cover my favorite supplements for skin health, and the week after that I’ll hit on what I do and don’t put on my skin because I have never worn face foundation or coverup except for on my wedding day.

Okay, that’s all for today, tender friends! Thank you for stopping by, and thank you for sharing!
