The Call to “Say Less”

Hello, tender friends!

I just LOVE when God sends me and Anthony the same message at the same time. The message we both got two weeks ago was “Say less.”

That was it.

Since receiving this message, I’ve intentionally made less conversation with people I encounter during the day. I’ve intentionally shared less when asked direct questions. I’ve intentionally stopped myself from telling stories no one may actually care about. (I’ve had slip ups, including just this morning, but I’m trying to focus on progress, not perfection. Sometimes I just talk and talk…and over talk. I’m sorry, Sarah!)

Saying less has been deeply peaceful.

God didn’t call me to a vow of silence or anything that extreme, but I understand why Buddhists take vows of silence as a spiritual practice. I’m appreciating James 1:19 in a way I never have before.

In an odd twist, I’ve actually gotten clear messages about the importance of toe separating since being obedient to the call to “say less.” Yes, you heard that right, toe separators.

I’ve also reached new levels of releasing trauma from the body through somatic exercises. Flexibility has been a struggle for me my whole life, but I stretched my hamstrings out more deeply than I’m typically able to after starting to “say less.”

I don’t believe this is coincidence. I’ll be sharing more about the importance of toe separators in my next post. They’ve been like a mini massage each evening and a surprising boost to my overall well being.

In the meantime, I’ll be saying less…so if we cross paths and I seem quieter than usual, you’ll know why.

Ok, tender friends, thank you for stopping by, and thank you for sharing!

I appreciate you sharing your journey with the Lord. I am inspired by the intimacy. This is a great reminder for us all. In this culture today, it seems that we must give our opinion, add things that do not need to be said. My voice is in my writing. This practice also increases the skill to becoming an active listener. Okay, I’m gonna stop talking now. Love you, my sister-in-Christ. Thanks again for sharing. Be blessed.

Thank you, SanVercell! I think you made really good points and there was no need to stop talking!

As for intimacy, I always want more. I’m almost always on a quest to hear God more clearly and a rhema word.

Love you back, sister in Christ.

I used to be a champion talker, but God has worked on me over the decades, helping me to become a better summarizer, leaving out unnecessary details. (If people want to know particulars, they can ask!) God has also prodded me to grant the gift of listening to those around me. My record isn’t perfect either, but improved? Yes. (Thank you, Heavenly Father!)

Thank you, as always, for your insight, Nancy! That is such a good point – if people want more detail they can certainly ask.

Part of the blessing is just simply in slowing down!

Wonderful! So much of what we say is fluff and filler. Praise God!

It is, Clara! Now I understand why people go on spiritual retreats where eye contact and talking is forbidden. I remember thinking it sounded too extreme when I first wrote about it, but it certainly gets more appealing the older that I get.
